Since its arrival on January 15, 2001, Wikipedia has become one of the most popular online encyclopedias available to the general public. Its ability to allow users to view, publish, and edit articles has propelled it into popularity. Larry Sanger and Jimmy Wales were the founders of Wikipedia. Their work for Wikipedia began on another online encyclopedia called “Nupedia” which was meant to have articles written and reviewed by experts. Wikipedia was initially launched as a way to help Nupedia but has since grown to be its own encyclopedia. By the end of 2001, Wikipedia had grown in popularity and had accumulated approximately 20,000 articles. Today, it has gathered almost 3 million articles.
Wikipedia works through the idea that the users are in control of the content. Anyone who has access to the website is allowed to adjust the articles. Because of its ability to be edited by anyone has been a source of controversy because people are worried that falsehoods will make their way onto the site. Errors have occurred, but the website has ways to catch them. One way is through the all of the users. The more people that use it, the quicker the mistakes are corrected. The other way is through the requirement of citations for the information provided. If there isn’t any source provided it is noted within the article.
