Apple purchased a media player called SoundJam MP in the year 2000. They then made a few small changes to it and on January 9, 2001 Apple released what we know now to be iTunes. The important features of iTunes are that it can be used to play music and video. Although playing is important, one of its most influential features that set it apart from other digital media players is its ability to download files legally. Because of this, iTunes has been a strong influence in the evolution of digital media. Not only can a person get music from iTunes, but they can get full length movies, television shows, audio books, and video games. Today the software can be found on many people’s computers because of these convenient abilities.
One of the reasons for the success of iTunes is because of the success of the iPod. On October 23, 2001 Apple released the iPod, a portable music player, to the public. Because iTunes and the iPod are connected in tandem, their popularity has grown together. ITunes transfers music from the computer to the iPod making it to where the ability for a person to enjoy their music library unlimited . The iPod has become a mainstream hit, selling over 206 million units since its launch, making it the best selling portable digital media player in the world.
